There’s a question that students may have wondered at one point or another - “What’s the difference between diplomas and degrees?” Maybe the real question is what’s the difference between college and university for post-secondary? Whether you’re sending out applications, or are already enrolled, knowing which path to take can be stressful. Colleges are more affordable, offering a hands-on learning experience, while universities, the more expensive option, focus on looking at concepts and ideas differently. That said, which one is better for you?
CanApply says colleges have smaller class sizes allowing students more access to professors, which would be a plus for anyone feeling like they needed more clarification about an assignment or topic. CanApply also says colleges prepare their students with the foundational skills and knowledge they need to apply for entry and mid-level positions. [1] According to University Canada West colleges focus on applied learning, which may be more valuable in the field they’re pursuing. [2] After graduating from college an entry-level position could help you get your foot in the door, prove yourself, and blaze your way to a position you’ll love.
According to an article written by Alex Usher, President at Higher Education Strategy Associates on Post Secondary BC, [3] there are 3 types of colleges in Canada,
Universities are sometimes depicted as a professor speaking in front of a huge lecture hall packed with students. That’s where you’ll be tested to earn your bachelor's, master's, or doctorate degree. According to University Canada West, [4] universities emphasize theoretical and academic aspects of education. In other words, they make you think. University isn’t cheap, but the knowledge you’re going to gain, might give you access to roles that may not be accessible right out of college. University isn’t in everyone’s budget, but then again, it’s not always about money, you might be pursuing a doctorate in something you’re passionate about.
A piece on SI Canada [5] discussing the Canadian University System, identified three categories of universities in Canada:
Choosing between college and university all depends on you, more specifically, what you want. You might have to answer some tough questions to decide which institution is the best fit for your dreams. Would you benefit more from applied learning or theoretical concepts? Are you comfortable in large lecture halls, or do you prefer a more intimate learning experience? How long are you willing to invest in your pursuit of knowledge? What do you want to accomplish? In the end, deciding between college and university might be a question about how you see yourself, the image you want to project, or what matters to you the most.

Can you really see yourself doing this as a career? Are you even going to be good at it? As you double and triple check your assignment due in an hour, you start to wonder - is this marketing education that you're pursuing – what you want or is it something you think you want?
